CLOSING BELL

The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended in red on Tuesday on account of weak global cues. Sensex closed 87.79 points down at 28,064, while Nifty settled 29.60 points down at 8,642.55. Sentiments also dampened after Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation for month of July climbed to a two-year high at 3.55 per cent as compared to 1.62 per cent in the previous month. Industrial inflation climbed to 1.8 per cent from 1.17 per cent last month.

In the 50-share index, Cipla, Adani Ports, Hindalco, BPCL and Ambuja Cements gained between 1.88 per cent and 7.38 per cent. On the other hand, Bharti Infratel, Bosch, Sun Pharma, Tech Mahindra and HCL Technologies skid between 2.23 per cent and 4.24 per cent.

Asian peers also ended lower on Tuesday. Hang Seng, Nikkei and Shanghai closed 0.09 per cent, 1.62 per cent and 0.49 per cent down at 22910.84, 16596.51 and 3110.04, respectively.

3.01 pm: NCC Ltd shares were trading 5.62 per cent up at Rs 81.70. The company on Friday reported 26.33 per cent rise in standalone net profit at Rs 52.34 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 against Rs 41.43 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago. Sensex was down 91 points at 2,9061. Nifty was down 28.15 points at 8,644.

2.19 pm: Shares of Power Grid Corporation were trading higher after the company reported 32.90 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 1807.77 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 against Rs 1355.64 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago. The scrip was trading 1.15 per cent up at Rs 179.95.

1.49 pm: Overall market breadth stood pessimistic as there were 973 shares on the gaining side against 1582 shares on the losing side, while 147 shares remained unchanged. Sensex was trading 161.90 points down at 27990. Nifty was down 55.30 points at 8,616.

12.52 pm: Jet Airways shares were trading over 2 per cent down after the airline major reported a 53.47 per cent fall in net profit for the June quarter, hit by higher operating expenses and lower sales.

12.30 pm: Sensex was down 148.45 points at 28003. Nifty was trading 53.10 points down at 8,619.

11.50 am: INOX Leisure was trading higher after it announced that the company has commenced the commercial operations of a Multiplex Cinema Theatre, taken on Lease basis, located at The Great Mall of Kota with effect from August 13, 2016. The said Multiplex Cinema Theatre has 4 screens and 861 seats. Shares of the company were trading 0.24 per cent up at Rs 254.

11.40 am: Sensex was trading 139 points down at 28017 in the late afternoon trade. Nifty was down by 50.40 points at 8621. Blue chips like Bharti Infratel, Aurobindo Pharma, Tata Motors and Tech Mahindra were down by 5.15 per cent, 2.32 per cent, 2.17 per cent and 2.13 per cent, respectively.

11.11 am: Hindalco was trading 2.94 per cent up at Rs 150.50. The company is planning to invest Rs 250 crore in a new wire-rod plant at Dahej in Gujarat. The new facility with a capacity of 2.50 lakh tonnes will take the company’s total wire-rod production capacity to four lakh tonnes from the current 1.50 lakh tonnes, the plant is likely to start the production by March 2018.

10.22 am: Indian rupee was trading 2 paise up at 66.86 against dollar. Sectors, such as BSE IT index, BSE Consumer Durables and BSE Auto index were trading in red.

10.00 am: Power Grid Corporation hit its fresh 52-week high of Rs 183.10. Shares of the company were trading 2.22 per cent up at Rs 182 on NSE. Sensex was up 14 points at 28,166.

9.58 am: Meanwhile, Jain Irrigation shares hit their fresh 52-week high of Rs 78.90. The scrip was trading 5.47 per cent up at Rs 78.10 on NSE.

9.23 am: Sensex was down 13.32 points at 28139. Nifty was trading 6.50 points down at 8665.65. In the 50-share index, ITC, BPCL, Power Grid, YES Bank, State Bank of India were up between 0.79 per cent and 1.33 per cent. On the other hand, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Tata Motors, Zee Entertainment and TCS slid between 0.83 per cent and 3.12 per cent.

9.15 am: BSE Sensex opened 37.64 points up at 28190.04, while NSE Nifty opened 1.90 points down at 8,670.25.

PRE-MARKETS

The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty are likely to open on a flat note with negative bias on Tuesday tracking Nifty futures on the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX Nifty) and mixed global cues. At 8.00 am (IST), SGX Nifty was down 5 points, or 0.06 per cent, at 8,711.50.

Asian peers Nikkei and Shanghai were trading down by 0.29 per cent and 0.08 per cent, respectively, in the morning trade. However, on Wall Street, S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average index and Nasdaq closed at all-time highs on Monday, gaining 0.3 to 0.6 per cent.

Shares of Allahabad Bank, NMDC and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) will remain in focus on Tuesday. Allahabad Bank registered a net loss of Rs 564.96 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 against net profit net profit of Rs 146.86 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago. Total income decreased by 5.07 per cent to Rs 5,122.91 crore for the quarter under review from Rs 5,396.44 crore in the same quarter last fiscal.

ONGC and its partners will invest Rs 823 crore to produce natural gas from coal seams of its Bokaro block in Jharkhand from 2017-18, according to PTI.

NMDC posted 29.95 per cent fall in net profit at Rs 711.31 crore for the quarter ended June 31, 2016 against Rs 1015.39 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago.
