The Indian stock market saw a positive close on Friday, with both the Sensex and Nifty continuing their upward movement following the release of the Economic Survey 2024-25. The benchmark index, Sensex, surged by 813.16 points, or 1.06%, ending the day at 77,572.97. Similarly, the NSE Nifty 50 rose by 285.20 points, or 1.23%, to close at 23,534.70.

Nifty Bank climbed 336.50 points, or 0.68%, to settle at 49,648.45.

The positive momentum follows the tabling of India’s Economic Survey for the fiscal year 2024-25 by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, marking the official start of the Budget 2025 session. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present her 8th consecutive Union Budget in Parliament tomorrow, February 1, 2025.

“The Nifty-50 Index and Sensex each gained 1.6% in the past week. While the mid-cap index gained around 0.3% and small-cap index lost around 0.7% in the past week. Sentiments remain subdued ahead of the FY26 Union Budget. The Q3FY25 earnings season has been broadly in line with our tepid expectations; however, management commentary remained uninspiring, further weighing on sentiments,” said Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities.

“Sector-wise, it was mixed bag. Capital goods (+3.5%), Auto (+3.0%), Realty (+6.2%), FMCG (+0.7%) and Power (+1.0%) ended in green. Major sectoral losers for the week include, IT (-1.9%), Consumer Durable (-0.9%), Metal (-0.5%), Telecom (-2.5%) and Pharma (-2.3%). Within the Nifty, Bharat Electronics (+8.2%), Hero MotoCorp (+7.9%) and M&M (+7.4%) gained the most, while HCL Tech (-3.9%), Sun Pharma (-3.8%) and Tata Motors (-3.5%) lost the most. FPI were net sellers in the past five days, while DIIs were net buyers in the same period,” he added.

Top gainers and losers

At the close of today’s trading, the Sensex top gainers include: LT rose by 4.37%, followed by IndusInd Bank with a 3.95% gain. Nestle India gained 3.71%, Titan increased by 3.60%, Tata Steel rose by 2.86%, and Tata Motors was up by 2.73%.

On the other hand, the losers key losers included ITC Hotels, which took the largest hit with a 2.77% decline. Bharti Airtel was down by 0.76% while Bajaj Finserv fell 0.27%. ICICI Bank and Bajaj Finance was both down by 0.14%.

From the the Nifty 50 pack, top 5 gainers Tata Consumer, BEL, Trent, Coal India, and LT were the top gainers, with Tata Consumer rising by 6.24%, BEL up by 5.47%, Trent increasing by 4.61%, Coal India gaining 4.49%, and LT climbing 4.18%.

On the flip side, the biggest losers included Bharti Airtel, which fell by 0.82%, ITC Hotels down by 0.77%, JSW Steel dropping 0.65%, ICICI Bank slipping by 0.21%, and Bajaj Finserv, which saw a slight decline of 0.16%.

Sectoral indices

The Nifty Midcap 50 index closed at 14,948.10, marking a gain of 1.87%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 index finished at 53,712.20, down by 0.01%. The Nifty Smallcap 50 index also saw a gain, closing at 8,049.35, up by 1.87%.
