Financial Express Online on Thursday organised the third edition of FE Healthcare Summit. The third session, ‘Sustainability: Beyond Green Chemistry’ highlighted how it is becoming imperative for the pharmaceutical companies to hospitals to think green.
The session included speakers like Sanjay Kumar, Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer, Granules India, Dr. K. Madan Gopal, Advisor, Public Health Administration, NHSRC, MoHFW, and Raj Shankar Ghosh, Advisor, Centre for Environmental Health, Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI).
The session was moderated by Dr Rajib Dasgupta, Professor (Community Health), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Sanjay Kumar warned that climate change is here. “The global surface temperature has increased. We have to contribute to de-carbonisation…we have to decrease our footprint and this will help in decarbonising the pharmaceutical sector,” he said.
Dr. K. Madan Gopal, Advisor, Public Health Administration, NHSRC, MoHFW highlighted that there is need to reduce the waste. “We have to focus on circular economy,” he said.
During the session, Raj Shankar Ghosh, Advisor, Centre for Environmental Health, Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) highlighted that the journey has now moved to people, productivity and pollution.
“There has to be a structure by which the green hospital has to be made…Arvind Hospital has excelled in becoming a green hospital and it has been applauded globally…its about using the natural resources in a better way. We have to reduce the consumption of natural resources, reuse and recyle the resouces,” he said.
Kumar also said that green ammonia has a wider usage and we can replace it with green methanol. Meanwhile, Dr. Gopal also highlighted that significant waste is generated by the medical industry.
During the session, Ghosh said also said that all aspects of healthcare need to prioritised.
