MG Motor Gloster

The Gloster is one of the few surviving D-segment SUVs in India and sits on top of JSW MG Motor India’s locally-assembled models. The full-size SUV is available in both 6- and 7-seater configurations. Gloster has received a five-star safety rating by Global NCAP. MG also offers the Gloster with an optional 4WD (4-wheel-drive) drivetrain.

The MG Gloster has a starting price of Rs 39.57 Lakh and a top-of-the-line price of Rs 44.74 Lakh. It's available in 15 variants, ranging from the entry-level Sharp 4x2 7Str to the flagship Desert Storm 4x4 7Str.

MG Gloster is available in two diesel engine options:

• A 2-litre diesel turbo (161 PS/373.5 Nm) with 2WD 

• A 2-litre diesel twin-turbo (215.5 PS/478.5 Nm) with 4WD

Both options are available with an 8-speed automatic transmission. There are seven drive/terrain modes on offer: Snow, Mud, Sand, Eco, Sport, Auto, and Rock.

MG Gloster comes equipped with features like a 12.3-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an 8-inch fully digital driver’s display, a panoramic sunroof, a 12-way adjustable driver seat, wireless phone charging, ventilated front seats, a hands-free tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, and 3-zone climate control.

Safety features onboard MG Gloster include six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), all-wheel disc brakes, electronic stability program (ESP), ISOFIX child seat anchors, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) including lane change assist, blind spot detection, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.

MG Motor offers Gloster with four monotone shades: Warm White, Metal Ash, Metal Black, and Deep Golden. Further, the Blackstorm edition is painted in Metal Black and Metal Ash, the Snowstorm is in a dual-tone Pearl White and Black, and the Desertstorm is dipped in Deep Golden.

MG Gloster, which happens to be the British carmaker’s fourth offering for India is a full-sized three-row SUV that will rub shoulders against the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Jeep Meridian, and Skoda Kodiaq. With a brawny appearance and numerous modern features & tech up its sleeve, has the Gloster got what it takes to establish itself as a worthy sub Rs 50 lakh SUV?

 In terms of off-roading options offered, it’s probably a step ahead. We drive it in a controlled environment (created by MG Motor India near Gurgaon). So, what does it offer? While I am almost certain no buyer of the Gloster will use all the off-roading modes available—seven drive modes (Snow, Mud, Sand, Eco, Sport, Auto and Rock)—this SUV has the bells and whistles in it to be termed an authentic SUV.

It’s got the ‘Intelligent All Terrain System’ that, MG says, provides better control during off-roading with a dedicated rear differential and BorgWarner transfer case and an electronic shift-on-the-fly technology. The SUV has the electromechanical differential lock that ensures if it’s stuck in slippery terrain, it can obtain driving force by transferring 100% torque to the wheel with traction. But these features are not available in the entry-level variants, but only in the Sharp and Savvy variants, priced Rs 33.68 lakh to Rs 35.38 lakh.
