Maruti Suzuki Celerio is an A segment hatchback offering from the Indian carmaker. A key highlight about the car is its 2 cylinder 793cc diesel engine, a global first. The engine also offers a best in segment mileage at 27.6 km/l. The Celerio also has an automatic (AMT) or Auto Gear Shift transmission in the petrol variants for a hassle free driving. A CNG option for the petrol trims is also available, thereby increasing the choices for a potential buyer. In terms of safety, most variants come with the option of ABS and dual front airbags for added occupant safety. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio also happens to be one of the very few cars in its segment that gets steering mounted audio and Bluetooth controls.
Steering mounted audio and Bluetooth controls add more convenience
Availability of optional ABS and dual front airbags on most variants adds to the safety
The world's first 2-cylinder passenger car diesel engine delivers best-in-segment 27.6 km/l, making the Celerio one of the cheapest diesel cars to run.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio has a simple design language, but feels dated. Measuring at 3,600 mm in length, 1,600 mm in width and 1,560 mm in height, the Celerio has compact dimensions making it manoeuvrable in urban traffic. That said, the simple design adversely affects the road presence. Ground clearance is good at 165 mm and the Celerio can tackle potholes with ease. The swept-back headlamps integrate a single beam housing along with fog lamps in the bumper and a clear lens tail lamp could use a refresh as they look a bit dull.
The interiors of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio come in a combination of black and beige on the dashboard, door panels and a two-tone fabric for the seats. The upper section of the dashboard, that houses a 2-DIN infotainment system has Bluetooth streaming and connectivity as well as steering mounted controls for the audio and phone. Although, phone controls are placed unconventionally, which takes sometime to get used to. The centre console also houses the AC controls and has cubby holes to store smaller objects. That said, cabin space could have been better and feels cramped with four to five adults seated. Ingress and egress can be difficult due to the low-height. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio has a boot space of 265 litres, whci is acceptable by segment standards.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio comes with two engine options, a 998cc 3-cylinder K10B petrol and a 796cc 2-cylinder DDIS125 diesel engine. The petrol unit generates 67hp max power at 6,000 rpm and 90Nm peak torque at 3,500 rpm and the diesel produces 47hp and 125Nm. While the petrol engine is relatively silent, the diesel has a considerable clatter, especially under acceleration.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio offers two gearbox options The petrol variants have the option of an AMT or Auto Gear Shift (AGS) along with the 5-speed manual while the diesel has a 5-speed manual transmisson only. Gear changes on both units are seamless and are complimented well by a light clutch.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio has added safety features that are not available in some other models in the A-segment hatchbacks. Most variants of the small car have optional additions of ABS and dual front airbags that add to the safety quotient along with crumple zones and impact absorbing beams.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio offers impressive fuel-efficiency in both engine options. While the petrol and CNG variants deliver a best-in-class 23.1 km/l and 31.7 km/kg, the diesel is even more frugal at 27.6 km/l.
