Financial Express Online on Thursday organised the third edition of FE Healthcare Summit. The first session, ‘Panel on Pharma: Prescription for change; the new growth drivers’, highlighted new approaches to address the changing disease profiles and growing lifestyle disease burden.

The session included eminent leaders like Dr Sharvil P. Patel , Managing Director, Zydus Lifesciences, Satish Reddy, Chairman, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Dr. Krishna M Ella, co-founder and Executive Chairman, Bharat Biotech International, and Priyanka Chigurupati ,Exceutive Director, Granules India.

On India becoming innovation hub, Dr. Krishna Ella said that we have competitions coming from countries like Vietnam.

According to Dr Sharvil P. Patel, India has created great capabilities with respect to various aspects of the industry. “As the industry evolves, we have to look at how we become innovation-driven. We have to also cater to the unmet and neglected needs. Companies need to healthy and profitable,” he said.

Meanwhile, Satish Reddy highlighted that area of innovation is critical.

“If you see from the point of view where the industry wants to go…the spaces we have to innovate is critical. A lot of work needs to be done with respect to drug discovery. Innovation is plausible everywhere,” Reddy said.

He also maintained that it is important for the regulators to safeguards for qualitative accomplishments.

Priyanka Chigurupati highlighted that there is a need for “huge” investments as well as incentives from the government.

On increasing footprints in emerging markets, Reddy said: “We have to look at what kind of opportunities these countries give…they have their on pecularities. Russia is become a big market for us…we have now expanded to countries like Columbia. There are also some underused generic market.”

During the session Patel also highlighted that India is at a very nascent stage with respect to innovation. “Unless there is a standard regulatory framework and enforcement…we still have a long way to go,” he said.

Chigurupati also emphasised on need for public-private partnership to essentially take on the countries that are doing it already. “A collaboration from non-pharma industry and AI companies will open room for opportunities. This is level of intervention is really neccessary at the moment…we need more support from the government.

During the session, Reddy also maintained that the regulatory process needs to change. “China started much later than us…but the environment they have created for innovation is very conducive….India needs to catch up,” he said.

Similarly, Dr. Ella highlighted that during the COVID-19 pandemic there was a political will. “Nobody is willing to compromise on the safety but there is need for scientific rationality. The ecosystem has to be conducive…countries like Bangladesh and Ghana are becoming aggressive. We have a lot to catch-up, he said.
