The Centre has finally notified the appointment of Kamlesh Chandra Chakrabarty as the deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday. Chakrabarty on Saturday confirmed the development and said he was yet to decide on the date when he would assume his new charge.

Sources, however, point out that Chakrabarty would join RBI next week. The post against which Chakrabarty has been appointed was lying vacant since the retirement of V Leeladhar in December last year. The Centre would also decide on the filling up of another vacancy of deputy governor post after Rakesh Mohan has gone to Stanford University as the distinguished professor.

Meanwhile, efforts have begun for filling up the vacancies of two chiefs at two large public sector banks?Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bank of India (BoI). BoI is currently without a CMD after TS Narayanasami retired on May 31, 2009. While the name of Alok Mishra, chairman and managing director of Oriental Bank of Commerce, is doing the rounds for BoI, SK Goel, CMD of UCO Bank, seems to be the frontrunner for the post of CMD at PNB. The other contenders to the post include Indian Bank CMD MS Sunder Rajan and Indian Overseas Bank CMD SA Bhat. However, both of them are having less than two years to serve as CMD. Normally, only those CMDs, who are having more than a couple of years of service left, are considered for such elevation.

Syndicate Bank is also waiting for a CMD since last month. The name of Union Bank of India executive director TY Prabhu is doing the rounds for the the post of OBC?S chief after Mishra is shifted to another bank.

Besides, process for finding out suitable persons for the posts of executive director of various state-run banks has also kickstarted and the interviews will take place on Monday and Tuesday in the national Capital.

A number of general managers have been invited to appear for the interview. Some of the GMs who are likely to appear for the interview include Nupur Mishra and Narendra Prasad (BoI); R Dhawan and Ranganathan and SP Singh from PNB.
