India’s T20 World Cup title defence has received a massive boost as star middle-order batter Tilak Varma has been officially cleared to return to competitive action. Following a successful recovery from surgery, the 23-year-old is set to rejoin the national squad in Mumbai this week.
Recovery & medical clearance
Varma had been sidelined for nearly a month after undergoing testicular surgery for an injury sustained during a Ranji Trophy fixture in early January. After a period of intensive rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, Varma successfully passed a high-intensity simulation match on Friday.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed the progress following India’s series-clinching win over New Zealand on Saturday:
“He has been shaping up well. I spoke to him yesterday; he has started batting, bowling, and fielding. We hope to have him back soon.”
Tilak Varma’s road to match fitness ahead of T20 World Cup
The left-hander, who was a “lock” for the squad after smashing two centuries against South Africa in late 2025, will use the next few days to regain match rhythm:
February 2: Expected to feature for India A in a warm-up fixture against the USA at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
February 3: Officially links up with the senior Indian squad.
February 4: Likely to play in India’s final official warm-up match against South Africa.
Tilak Varma played an impactful role in T20 World Cup
Varma’s return resolves a major selection headache for the team management. In his absence, Ishan Kishan made a strong case for the No. 3 spot, notably scoring a 42-ball century in the final T20I against New Zealand. However, Varma’s ability to stabilise the innings and his utility as an off-spin option make him a vital cog in the middle order as India prepares for their tournament opener against the USA on February 7.
With Sanju Samson only managing 46 runs in the New Zealand series, Kishan might get to open with Abhishek Sharma with Tilak coming in at number 3.
