There are opportunities in the lesser known places for smart students passing out from tier I institutes to get packages equivalent to the ones typically being given by type-A companies.

Biggies like Vodafone, HT Media, Axis Bank, Blue Star, Dell Computers, Innovative India and HDFC Standard Life Insurance thronged the campus of Maharishi Markendeshwar University in Mullana near Ambala to place its engineering and management students and selected 160 of its students. Same goes for Ryatt and Bahra campus in Punjab.

Vice-chancellor of Maharishi Markendeshwar University, SG Damle said, ?We did get a slow response from the companies initially but hardwork was put in by our people who offered expected results?. ?Big companies like Lupin Limited, HT Media, India Mart Intermesh, Hewitt Packard, TCS, Infosys and Blue Star technologies have also visited our campus last week and picked students for various positions in marketing and HR,? Damle added. The students could be seen in high spirits on getting the salary packages they had dreamt of. Nine of its students from the university have been successful to bag a package of Rs 16 lakh each ?

Similarly, Agilyst Consulting, a Mohali based KPO (knowledge process outsourcing) company, which provides operational support to major communications clients in North America, including Fortune 100 companies, has recently hired more than 50 people, 85% of them engineers, at handsome salaries. Since starting in 2008, it has expanded its team to 200 and plans to at least double its team strength by end 2009.

Mahesh Dhillon, founder of Agilyst Consulting and his partner Harvinder Mavi confirmed that the recent hiring has been from colleges like Ryatt and Bahra, UBS and Kurukshetra University. At least a dozen of them are those who had been recruited by bigwigs like Satyam, Wipro and Tech Mahindra but could not join because of downturn.

Little doubt the universities situated in smaller places in Punjab and Haryana have been able to face the global meltdown. Students even from the premier universities are not getting jobs at this point of time due to the shrinking job market.

Another interesting development in the education field when news emanating from the prestigious institutes of the country, reflects a dismal and disillusioned picture at the placement front, the Punjab-based Lovely Professional University, Phagwara has issued offer letters to 165 candidates for various positions against though the total number of 465 applications. This includes more than 100 candidates from IIT Delhi, IIT Chennai, IIT Mumbai, IIT Roorkee and IIT Kanpur. Such a huge turn-up of the candidates points that the alumni of these prestigious institutes have started looking beyond the option of placing themselves with MNCs or studying abroad.
