Both Apple and Samsung have launched its flagship smartphones this year. In 2017, while Apple launched the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, Samsung also unveiled its Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus, and Galaxy Note 8. According to a recent report in The Wall Street Journal, the Korean tech giant will apparently earn $4 billion more in terms of revenue by making iPhone X parts than making its own Galaxy S8 parts. WSJ cited a research by Counterpoint Technology, which based the prediction on the next 20 months after the premium Apple device goes on sale next month.

It is a well-known fact that Samsung manufactured OLED display screens and NAND flash memory chips for Apple to make the iPhone X. The Counterpoint Research says that the initial 20 months is when most amounts of sales occur, and it said that Apple may sell around 130 million iPhone X’s. The report adds that Samsung will earn $110 on each of these devices. When it comes to the Galaxy S8, Samsung will earn $202 on each device sold. However, research expects that the company will be able to sell only 50 million units.

The report in WSJ says that Samsung and Apple partnership goes long back to when Samsung founder’s son Lee Jae-Yong and former Apple CEO Steve Jobs negotiated a deal for making flash memory for iPods. Now, these two are some of the most profitable companies in the world, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Yet, Apple’s dependence on Samsung is necessary more than just history. The Korean company is one of the few firms which make the flash memory in big numbers as well as the OLED screens.

It is interesting to note that in the year 2011, both the companies went through a bump when they sued each other over alleged patent infringements. Meanwhile, Samsung making the OLED screens of the iPhone X, maybe one of the major reasons why the Apple device is priced so high. A Mac Rumors report said that Apple is working with companies like Sharp and Japan Display so that it can decrease its dependency on Samsung for the parts. However, this time, Apple’s success is Samsung’s success too.
