Mizoram Assembly Election 2023, ZPM Candidate List Out: Zoram People’s Movement, which is the principal opposition in Mizoram, released the names of all its candidates for 40 Assembly seats. Elections for the 40 seats in Mizoram will be held on November 7 and counting of dates will be on December 3. The state is all set to witness an intense three-cornered electoral contest between the ruling Chief Minister Zoramthanga-led Mizo National Front (MNF), the Opposition Zoram People’s Movement and the Congress.

Since the formation of the Mizoram in 1987, the state has been ruled by the Mizoram National Front and the Congress. However, given the stunning performance of Zoram’s People Movement for the Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC), Mizoram’s second civic body, the first being in the capital Aizawl, where it bagged 11 wards, registering a vote share of over 49%, while the MNF and Congress, who too fought all wards, had bagged vote shares of 29% plus and 20%, respectively. Its massive win had given rise to speculation over MNF’s anti-incumbency factor.

Lalduhoma, who is being pitched as the CM candidate from the Zoram People’s Movement, is contesting from his home turf Serchhip. Lalthansanga (Chatea) will be contesting from the Aizawl East – 1 constituency from where Chief Minister and Mizo National Front chief Zoramthanga will be contesting.

In the 2018 Mizoram elections, the Congress and MNF had contested all 40 seats. MNF had bagged 28 seats and the Congress secured five seats. The BJP contested 39 seats and won a single seat, while ZPM candidates, who ran as independents, secured six seats.
Mizoram Elections 2023:
Election to the 40-member Mizoram assembly will be held on November 7 and counting of votes for all the five states will take place on December 3, which is Sunday. However, seven political parties, including the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and BJP, wrote to the ECI jointly on October 12 urging it to reschedule the counting day. As per the 2011 census, about 80 per cent of the population in Mizoram are Christians. For Mizoram Elections 2023, a total of 1,276 polling stations will be set up. There are 4,12,969 male electors, 4,38,925 female electors, 4,973 service electors and the total number of electors is 8,51,895, as per the electoral roll. There are 50,611 young voters and 8,490 senior citizen voters.
