The Indian Space Research Station (ISRO), in an attempt, at a new age of high-speed internet in India, will be launching three communications satellites, namely GSAT-19, GSAT-11 and GSAT-20 in the next 18 months, Indian Express reported. According to the report, along with the revolutionisation of televisions and smartphones, these satellites will be driving the future communication that smart cities need at the most priority. Tapan Misra, the Director if the Ahmedabad-based Space Applications Centre (SAC) spoke to the Indian Express and said, “The next big launch will be GSAT-19 in June… With this launch, we will begin a new age of communication satellites. It is also the beginning of high-throughput satellites (in India).” The Space Applications Centre (SAC) is a branch of the Indian Space Research Station which develops satellite payloads.
Misra further said that the people were already witnessing a big change in the communication technology, where the Internet has become the medium of voice and video communications. Misra said, “With future launches, television will be viewed through the Internet using wireless Technology”. Indian Express reports that high-throughput satellites have proved to be a game changer in many developed countries and have provided faster and smoother internet connectivity at cheaper rates. Misra spoke about the high internet speed that the satellites were capable of and said, “The effective data rate of GSAT satellites is one gigabyte per second. GSAT-19 will be able to transfer data at four gigabytes per second, thus making it equivalent to four satellites”.
The ISRO scientist informed that the GSAT-11, which is one of the heaviest satellites built by the ISRO was scheduled to be launched in January 2018. He said that the GSAT-11 would be having the data rate of 14 GB per second. “We plan to launch GSAT-20 by the end of next year. We plan to cover the entire nation with a satellite that will offer a data rate of 70 gigabytes per second. This is in sync with the requirement of high data-rate transmission needed by smart cities,” Misra said. The GSAT-19 would mark the first of three tests of the GSLV Mark-III launcher before it was officially declared operational.
