An unidentified gang of burglars made a futile bid to break open the ATM kiosk of a nationalised bank in this district and steal cash, early today, police said. The CCTV camera footage recovered from the spot shows two masked men wearing helmets and gloves entering the ATM kiosk attached to Canara bank at 1.30 AM. They tried to break open the ATM machine, Kanhangad Deputy Superintendent of Police T K Damodharan said adding they left the spot around 3 AM after several unsuccessful attempts to break it open.
The incident came to light when the police, who were on patrol duty in the area, noticed the damaged machine and reported the matter to Bakel police station and the bank officials following which a police team rushed to the spot. Out of the total Rs 20 lakh deposited in the ATM about two days ago, Rs 4 lakh has been withdrawn by customers while the balance amount remains safe, he said quoting bank officials. Further investigations are on, the senior police official said.
