One of the veteran all rounders in India men’s T20 and ODI team, Hardik Pandya has once again become the centre of a new cricketing debate.
In a video that has surfaced recently on Twitter, Pandya is seen walking along with his girlfriend at the Indian team hotel for the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup just days after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced strict rules for ‘romantic partners/fiances and family members’ travelling with the players.
The video has since then prompted a lot of speculation and questions from Indian fans, with some saying that should senior players like Pandya be given the freedom to break board rules as they wish to.
Earlier this week, reports indicated that the BCCI had turned down a request from team management to allow wives, fiancées, and family members to stay with the players during the tournament.
What does the BCCI policy mandate?
As per the new policy of the BCCI players are not allowed to keep their wives or girlfriends in the team hotel or bio-bubble during small tournaments.
If they want to stay with them, they have to make separate arrangements in another hotel at their own expense. They cannot bring them inside the team hotel or restricted bubble area.
It is amidst this backdrop that Hardik Pandya being seen moving around the team hotel with his girlfriend has drawn widespread conversations about implementation of formal BCCI regulations for all members of the Indian team.
“Is BCCI not properly enforcing its own rules, or is there some special permission in this case?,” many netizens questioned X.
According to a report by The Indian Express, Suryakumar Yadav-captained side will be travelling on a private charter throughout the tournament. Players have personal chefs but have booked them at the nearest hotel where they can cook food for them and send it over.
Backdrop of the alleged rule-breaking: Pandya’s performance against Naimbia
Despite the chatter, Pandya’s on-field results remain his strongest defense. On February 12, Pandya led India to a commanding 93-run victory over Namibia where he smashed 52 runs off 28 balls and even picked up two crucial wickets.
“Body has been fantastic. I do an army-like camp a month before the tournament,” Pandya said after being named Player of the Match.
While the BCCI has not officially commented on the viral video, the contrast between the board’s “strict discipline” narrative and Pandya’s individualistic approach continues to divide the internet. For now, as long as the wickets and runs keep coming, the “rule-breaking” talk remains restricted to the comments section.
India’s T20 World Cup campaign
Despite the off-field chatter, India’s campaign in the 2026 T20 World Cup has seemed to have gotten off to a good start. With two wins from two matches, having previously defeated the USA and Namibia, the ‘men in blue’ currently sit at the top of Group A of the T20 team tables.
Team India is now preparing for the tournament’s biggest blockbuster: the clash against Pakistan in Colombo on Sunday, February 15.
While the “rule-breaking” debate continues to trend online, the Indian management will be hoping that Pandya continues his ongoing form and showcases all-round brilliance on matchday.
