Congressman Thanedar is introducing the Abolish ICE Act, legislation that would dismantle the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and end its current enforcement authority.
“The tragic death of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, a 37-year-old mother fatally shot by an ICE agent, shows that ICE cannot be reformed and must be abolished. The Abolish ICE Act is a step toward justice, accountability, and a more humane approach to immigration policy,” reads Thanedar’s post on his official website.
The Abolish ICE Act
Since ICE was established in 2003, legal experts have argued that its mission could be carried out more effectively and justly by other federal agencies, because its design prioritizes terror over justice. Decades of terror tactics culminated in the killing of Renee Nicole Good, making clear that ICE is not an organization bound by the rule of law. When an agency’s structure consistently produces harm instead of justice, there is no way to reform it. We must fundamentally change the way we approach immigration,” said Thanedar in the post dated January 9.
Impeachment of DHS Secretary
In another development, Thanedar is supporting the impeachment of Secretary of department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
On January 14, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability for the House Committee on Homeland Security, Congressman Thanedar, released the following statement:
“Secretary Kristi Noem has lied to Congress and to the American people. Under her leadership, ICE agents have wreaked havoc on communities across this country. She has disgraced our democracy.” Secretary Noem has committed the following offenses:
Eight people have been shot by DHS agents, five of them U.S. citizens.
One citizen, Reene Nicole Good, was murdered in Minneapolis last week. Despite video evidence, Secretary Noem publicly defended the agent.
In 2025, 32 people died in ICE detention centers.
DHS shields agents from accountability through qualified immunity.
Secretary Noem denied Members of Congress access to immigration facilities.
DHS blocked congressional oversight and ignored lawful requests from Congress regarding agency operations.
“At a Homeland Security hearing in December, I called out Noem for lying to me in a Congressional hearing and demanded she resign. Secretary Noem’s actions go beyond incompetence. She has broken the law. I fully support the impeachment of Kristi Noem,” said Thanedar in his statement.
