Volvo Cars’ youngest and most new SUV, 2018 Volvo XC40 will make its India debut by mid-next year. Volvo Cars India has been aggressive in India and the products make it to India in less than 6 months since its global debut. The new Volvo XC40 completes the Volvo’s line-up in a segment that has been rapidly growing and has seen a huge demand across the world especially in emerging markets like India. Recently, Volvo XC60 SUV made its India debut and the company’s flagship SUV Volvo XC90 has been in the Indian market for a while now.
2018 Volvo XC40 is based on the Common Modular Architecture (CMA) platform and has allowed the designers to be flexible with its design by carrying the Volvo’s family design and making it look fresh. Volvo’s other SUV are based on SPA platform and CMA is usually for the smaller vehicles like the Volvo V40. The CMA platform has allowed the company to be cost competitive for young and emerging markets. This platform will also underpin series of electric vehicles from Volvo and is developed with its parent company Geely, which has provided the necessary synergies and economies of scale for the smaller SUV.
New 2018 Volvo XC40 SUV has already been featured on Volvo Cars’ India website but does not reveal any variant or technical details. The XC40 resembles the 40.1 concept showcased in 2016 and the face of the SUV continue to get Thor Hammer’s DRLs and looks similar to that of Volvo XC60 and Volvo XC90 SUVs. Volvo XC40 is 4425 mm in length, 1863 mm in width and stands tall at 1652 mm with a wheelbase of 2702mm. Volvo XC40 will rival the likes of Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.
Globally the Volvo XC40 is available in one petrol and one diesel engine option. Expect India to get the diesel 2018 Volvo XC40 at launch and T5 petrol variant later. The new XC60 D4 diesel variant sheds a power of 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-Speed gearbox as in the Volvo XC60. Since 2012, the Swedish company has invested a lot in development of new platforms and new engines and has announced that the company will no longer be investing in V6 or higher engines and will focus on developing more efficient and high performing petrol and diesel engines.
The Volvo XC40 SUV will come to India via the CBUs unit before starting the local assembly once the production at its Bengaluru assembly plant is ramped up. Before the XC40, Volvo XC60 will begin the local production in India in 2018. Initially the Volvo XC40 will be imported from the company’s Belgium plant. We expect the price of Volvo XC40 to be around Rs 30 lakh but the company might surprise us by being more aggressive with its pricing.
