The world?s second largest liquor player by volume, United Spirits Ltd (USL), has recorded a 31.8% fall in profit for the quarter ended June, down to Rs 121.05 crore from Rs 177.59 crore in the year ago period. Total expenditure grew 15% to Rs 1190.96 crore from Rs 1027.81 crore last year, dragging the net profit down. The total income during the quarter stood at Rs 1,470.61 crore, up 17.83% from Rs 1,248.05 crore in the same period last year. ?Sales volumes were at 26.7 million cases, up 6% over the comparable period of the previous fiscal,? the company said in a statement.

Zee Entertainment profit at Rs 150 crore

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) on Tuesday said it posted a 64% rise in net profit at Rs 150 crore for the June quarter of 2010-11 against Rs 91 crore in the corresponding quarter of last year. Higher advertising and subscription revenues helped the media conglomerate post healthy profits. Sales also surged 42% to Rs 677 crore against Rs 476 crore.

Subscription revenues also grew 8.5% at Rs 261 crore during the quarter under preview. Meanwhile, shares of the company dipped 2.16% to close the day at Rs 309.55 on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

PTC Q1 operational profit jumps 94%

Power trading major PTC India said Tuesday that its operational profit grew 94% to Rs 26.58 crore in the first quarter of the current financial year on higher volumes and better margin from electricity trading. The company traded 5,747 million units of electricity in the latest quarter, a growth of 36.7% over the same period of the previous year. Its income from operations rose 16% to Rs 2,757 crore during this period. The profit after tax, however, declined 16.62% because of a higher ratio of taxable income compared with corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

During the period under review, PTC was awarded the letter of intent (LOI) for supplying 1,380 mw to Power Company of Karnataka Limited (PCKL) on a long-term basis. The company has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 667 mw generation capacity.

Sonata Software net profit at Rs 18.23 crore

Mid-tier IT services firm Sonata Software has posted a 3% rise in consolidated net profit while revenue slipped 11.8% for the quarter ended June 30, 2010. The company reported a profit of Rs 18.23 crore as against Rs 17.76 crore during the same period last year. Consolidated revenue fell to Rs 333.31 crore from Rs 378.02 crore.

NIIT Tech profit jumps two fold

IT firm NIIT Technologies on Tuesday said it has posted more than a two-fold jump in its net profits for the quarter ended June 30, 2010, because of reduced hedging losses and improved operational efficiency. It posted Rs 40.8 crore in net profits against Rs 17.6 crore for the same quarter last fiscal.
