Kerala is celebrating the 100th birthday of Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom, Mar Thoma Metropolitan who is a well-known and much-loved figure in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted warm birthday wishes to Metropolitan Emeritus, Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom on Twitter:”On the special occasion of his 100th birthday, warmest greetings to Metropolitan Emeritus, His Grace Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom…has devoted himself towards service. I pray for his long and healthy life.”

Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom is a popular figure with Malayalis from all walks of life. His writings are popular with Malayalis, his interviews are peppered with a humor and with a realistic take on contemporary life. By using humor, Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom speaks a simple language that combines the best of wit and practicality, without a tint of religion. His solutions to grave problems are served in the form of funny anecdotes instead of lectures or sermons. His style of communication is full of good humor and appeals to all sections of the society.

Among his funny quotes and anecdotes, here is one: “In today’s society, all problems are created by three unmarried women – Mis understanding, Mis representation and Mis interpretation.”

Referring to the purpose of the Christian sabha (community), Dr. Matthew Koshy Punnakaadu cites Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom’s words in Manorama Online (Malayalam): “God loves the whole world – that is what is taught and told to us. It is not said that God loves the ”sabha” – the “sabha” is for the world’s welfare at large, not for self-interest or welfare of itself. Look at our soldiers – they will die so that others will live. The sabha is also like that – should dedicate its existence for the well-being and welfare of the world. Instead what we are doing now is that for the welfare of the sabha, we are using the world now.”

There are many such gems of practical insights that Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom is known to articulate. He has authored several books, is a noted speaker at many events and a much sought after columnist.
