Monday, January 20, marks the birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. This year, the holiday coincides with President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, although most business closures will be in observance of MLK Day. King’s birthday falls on January 15, but the federal holiday is always observed on the third Monday of January.

Donald Trump Inauguration, Swearing-in Live Updates

Just days after King’s assassination in 1968, US Rep. John Conyers of Michigan introduced a bill to establish a federal holiday in his honor. The holiday was finally signed into law in 1983, and the first national celebration occurred in 1986 after years of advocacy. In 1999, New Hampshire became the last state to adopt the holiday.
