New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner hit an unbeaten 47 and was helped by Rachin Ravindra (44) and Zakary Foulkes (15*) as the Kiwis reached 208/6 in their 20 overs.
Early on, the Indian cricket team captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and opted to bowl first. He took that decision considering the dew that is expected to come down heavily in the second innings.
Chasing 209 to win, India lost two back-to-back wickets of their openers, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, in the first two overs.
