Xiaomi on Tuesday took the wraps off the next version of highly-customised OS – the MIUI 10. The Chinese company made the announcement at its Annual Meeting for MIUI division, where Hong Feng, co-founder and vice president of Xiaomi who also heads the MIUI division, confirmed that the MIUI 10 is now being developed. The MIUI 10 is expected to focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning features that will be incorporated in future Xiaomi phones. Separately, Xiaomi is also expected to unveil its Surge S2 chipset next month at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018.

Starting with the new version of MIUI, Xiaomi said that it has started the development of MIUI 10. According to some leaked images, the slide presented at the Xiaomi’s meeting confirms the development. Since the development on MIUI 10 is in an early stage, there isn’t much information regarding the features of Xiaomi’s new OS. However, Feng in an interview last year hinted that the MIUI 10 will have artificial intelligence and machine learning as its highlighted features. This will replace MIUI 9 that was announced alongside the Xiaomi Mi 5X last year and is currently rolling out to Xiaomi smartphones under the version MIUI 9.2. Xiaomi also recently said that some of its older smartphones won’t get the MIUI 10 update.

Coming to the Xiaomi Surge S2, the customised chipset will be a sequel to the Xiaomi Surge S1 that was introduced last year. According to Mydrivers, the Xiaomi Surge S2 will feature an octa-core CPU, wherein four Cortex-A73 cores will be clocked at 2.2GHz and the other four Cortex-A53 cores will be running at 1.8GHz. The processor will be paired with a Mali-G71 MP8 for graphics performance, which is also an improvement over the Mali-T860 GPU found in the Surge S1.

The first device that is rumoured to be powered by the Surge S2 will be the Xiaomi Mi 6X, the shockproof case of which has also leaked, thanks to SlashLeaks. According to the render, the Xiaomi Mi 6X will have a tall, bezel-reduced display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. There will be a fingerprint sensor at the back and above it will be the dual camera setup, aligned vertically. However, going by the naming convention adopted by Xiaomi, this smartphone could commercially launch as Mi A2, the sequel to the Mi A1, reports SlashLeaks. But contrary to this, Xiaomi Mi A1 is sold under the Android One programme, and Google hasn’t divulged any concrete development on this as of now.
