ITR Filing 2024: You can now file income tax returns via WhatsApp, thanks to a new facility launched by ClearTax. The service aims to simplify tax filing by allowing users to complete their returns through the popular messaging platform.

ClearTax’s initiative supports ITR 1 and ITR 4 forms, addressing the needs of most low-income taxpayers. The move is designed to eliminate technological barriers and enable millions of Indians to file their returns and claim refunds with ease, using just a few taps on their phones. This service aligns with the goal of promoting financial empowerment and self-reliance among the population.

ITR-1 Form

ITR-1, also known as SAHAJ, is supposed to be used for a return filing by individuals earning income from salaries or pensions, a single house property, or other sources (excluding betting, gambling, and lotteries). This form is suitable for taxpayers with straightforward financial situations.

ITR-4 Form

The ITR-4 form, also known as Sugam, is applicable to individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and Partnership Firms earning income from a business or profession. This form is designed for taxpayers who need to report income from these sources in a simplified manner.

Here’s How to File Your ITR on WhatsApp:

  • To begin with, send a message to ClearTax on its WhatsApp number.
  • Select your preferred language from 10 available options. Soon, you are greeted with a welcome message and will be guided for the next steps.
  • Next you will be asked to provide your PAN details.
  • You will be asked to provide other details like email ID, Aadhaar number and date of birth.
  • You get an OTP to verify your credentials on email.
  • Once these steps are over, you get 3-4 more OTPs (which pertain to ITR filing process), each with a gap of around 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Once all the OTPs are entered in WhatsApp chat, you receive a tax summary showing earnings and other details, including tax refund amount, if you are eligible to receive.
  • In the next step, you will receive a payment link. Open the link which will redirect you to a new page.
  • You receive an OTP to complete the payment. Keep WhatsApp app open in the background.
  • Once payment is successful, you receive a confirmation message.
  • Type ‘Next Step’ in chat and click on ‘paid e-file’.
  • Once this is completed, you get another OTP on your mobile number to complete e-filing process.

At present, the service supports ITR-1 and ITR-4. Additionally, ITR-4 can be used if you have agricultural income up to Rs 5,000 or if the income of your spouse or minor is clubbed, provided it does not exceed ₹50 lakh.

Submit the required information via images, audio, or text. This includes personal details, income information, and necessary documents.

You can complete the filing process by making a payment through the secure integration system available within the WhatsApp interface.

The WhatsApp ITR filing service is offered in 10 languages, including English, Hindi, Kannada, and others, to accommodate a diverse user base.
