Indian equity benchmarks closed Thursday’s trade on a higher note as metal stocks shone. The Nifty 50 closed the day 136 points or 0.54% higher at 25,182, and the Sensex jumped 400 points or 0.49% to end at 82,172. The Nifty Metal outperformed all the sectoral indices to surge over 2%.

In line with the benchmarks, the Nifty Bank settled 174 points or 0.31% higher at 56,192. The midcap stocks also surged in today’s trade. The BSE Midcap surged 346 points, or 0.75%, at 46,198.26. The BSE Smallcap finished 98 points or 0.18% higher at 53,064.43.

Indices in intraday trade

The indices closed Thursday’s session on a positive note. During the session, out of 3,191 trading stocks, 1,600 advanced, while 1,495 declined, and 96 remained unchanged. Today, 86 stocks hit a fresh 52-week high. Meanwhile, 90 stocks touched a new 52-week low. 

Top gainers 

JSW Steel was the top gainer in the Nifty 50 in Thursday’s session, closing 2.8% higher. It was followed by Tata Steel, HCL Technologies, SBI Life Insurance, and UltraTech Cement. 

Top losers

Axis Bank’s shares were the biggest losers in today’s trade, declining 1.2%. It was followed by Titan, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, and Tata Consumer Products were the only losers. 

Top sectors in Thursday’s trade

The metal (non-ferrous) sector’s stocks rose the most in Thursday’s strong trade, rising 3.13% in the market capitalisation. Further, beverage stocks were followed by the iron & steel sector stocks, which were further followed by the mining sector stocks. The defence stocks stood behind the shipping sector. However, the leather sector stocks fell the most.

Best and worst performing business groups 

The Jindal BC Group’s market cap rose the most in today’s session, rising 9.3%. It was followed by the Nagarjuna Group. Apart from that, Vedanta’s market capitalisation rose the most, increasing 3.5%. In the list of Vedanta Group stocks, Hindustan Zinc’s share rallied almost 5%.
