Google will soon delete all your location history! Yes, in an official blog post, Google highlights that it will be removing the history from Google Maps. Google Maps has a ‘Timeline’ feature that captures your location and saves it. However, with the new update, this will no longer be the case. Here’s a detailed explanation of what is going to change.

Google Maps to Delete ‘Timeline’ History

According to emails sent to users by Google, the tech giant will remove data older than three months. Since December 2023, Google has been saving your location history on your device, instead of in Google Cloud. But now, this data will be deleted. The emails also highlighted that the initiative will take effect by December 1

Save Your Data Now!

So, how can you save your data? Google has added a link in the warning emails. To save your data, you need to click on the link. This link will redirect you to a set of instructions on how to save your location history. The link takes you to a page where you can choose between keeping your data until you delete it or automatically deleting it after three months.

However, a recent report by Android Authority suggests that some people who chose the ‘Keep until you delete’ option have reported that their Timeline data has already been deleted. Therefore, it is recommended that before choosing an option, you first export your location history using Google Takeout. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to takeout.google.com.
  2. Uncheck everything except for Location History (Timeline).
  3. Click on the button named ‘Next step’.
  4. Finally, tap on ‘Create export’.

Now, you’re all set to save your Timeline data. Even if your data is deleted, you’ll have a copy saved.
