Artificial intelligence (AI) has progressed from being a buzzword to becoming an integral part of every innovation and business operation. And agentic AI, a subset of AI applications, is making its way with its sophisticated reasoning, autonomy, and adaptability. Wipro’s AI-powered approach allows them to architect industry and cross-industry solutions that drive real business outcomes. In this interview, Nagendra Bandaru, president, Technology Services, Wipro, speaks to Sudhir Chowdhary on the IT major’s approach to implementation and how it is helping enterprises stay ahead of the curve. Excerpts:
There has been much discussion about AI in IT services. Is it being used in practical applications?
AI’s deployment in IT services has moved beyond experimentation to mainstream integration. AI is increasingly becoming central to every engagement, enabling greater productivity and smarter experiences. We are infusing AI into our delivery engagements to significantly enhance speed and quality. For example, by integrating AI across the software development lifecycle we have accelerated development cycles, improved code quality, and reduced defects.
Beyond software development, we are leveraging AI across client engagements and internal operations, such as HR, finance, legal, and other functional areas. For example, our internal medical claims solution processes over 10,000 claims monthly, completely touchless, enhancing both speed and service quality.
How is Wipro planning to capitalise on the growing trend of hybrid deals in IT services?
Hybrid deals are becoming a major growth lever, as enterprises are increasingly seeking integrated solutions that address their unique business needs. As enterprises look to modernise their IT infrastructures and build the data foundation needed for an AI-first future, our consulting-led, AI-powered approach is allowing us to architect industry and cross-industry solutions that drive real business outcomes.
We are also collaborating with global hyperscalers as well as key tech players, such as Nvidia, to drive innovation and deliver enhanced value. These partnerships are allowing us to leverage a mix of strategies to address clients’ distinct goals.
Additionally, we brought together our cloud, data, analytics, AI and partnership capabilities under our Technology Services business line. This structure allows us to respond to client needs with agility and speed, and enable large scale transformation across the enterprise tech stack through a holistic approach.
In fact, our recent mega deal win with Phoenix Group is a strong example of how these strategies are paying off, as it brings together cloud modernisation, AI automation, and strategic consulting in one comprehensive deal.
Do you see the adoption of agentic AI speeding up?
Agentic AI is here and driving the next phase of AI-powered transformation by enabling systems to act autonomously, adapt to new data, and make complex decisions.
Organisations are using agentic AI, whether it’s for automating back-office tasks so financial advisors have more time to help clients, enabling more efficient industrial processes, or adjusting drill paths to optimise extraction in an oil patch.
For example, in healthcare we are working with clients in building agents that automate provider credentialing and onboarding. In energy & utilities, AI is helping with predictive maintenance by autonomously diagnosing faults and adapting maintenance schedules to improve infrastructure reliability. In retail and consumer industries, AI-powered assistants are helping manage refunds, complaints, and customer inquiries while dynamically adjusting pricing and product recommendations based on demand.
And we are seeing clients realise real ROI and value from these implementations. For example, a global retailer client engaged us to build a solution that helps them more efficiently manage their global product distribution and supply chains. We helped them develop an agentic AI solution to automate free trade agreement eligibility checks and customs documentation across dozens of countries. The solution helped reduce duty leakage and avoid port-clearance delays, driving significant cost savings and accelerated go-to-market for products.
AI is contributing to productivity improvements in the IT services sector. How is this affecting your revenue and profitability growth?
AI is playing a pivotal role in enhancing both profitability and operational efficiency. Our AI-powered, consulting-led approach is yielding real results for us and our clients. Across Wipro, we are embedding AI across our service lines, delivery operations, and internal processes to drive smarter resourcing, automation, and faster time-to-value for clients.
How does Wipro ensure the safety of its clients and end users?
We help clients implement robust AI governance frameworks with principles like privacy-by-design, ethical deployment, and secure model rollouts. Security is embedded into our AI innovation strategy from the ground up. We follow a Zero Trust architecture, enhanced by advanced identity and posture controls through partnerships. Our AI-powered platforms—cybershield and CyberTransform—enable real-time governance, proactive threat detection, and continuous operational monitoring. This layered approach ensures that our AI systems remain secure, compliant, and trustworthy at scale.
