Mizoram Elections: A total of 35 out of the 39 MLAs are crorepatis, according to a report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Mizoram Election Watch.

“Out of 39 MLAs, there is not a single woman MLA,” the report read, which was released on Monday. The analysis was based on the affidavits submitted by the candidates prior to the 2018 Assembly elections and by-elections conducted thereafter.

A total of 23 out of 27 MLAs (85 per cent) belong to the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and have declared assets worth over Rs one crore. All MLAs from Opposition party Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) (6), Congress (5) and BJP (1) are all crorepatis.

Mizoram Richest MLA

The richest MLA is Robert Romawia Royte from Aizawl East II constituency, with declared assets worth over Rs 44 crore. T.J Lalnuntluanga from the Champhai South is the MLA with the lowest assets worth over Rs 43 lakh.

The average assets per sitting MLA is Rs 4.80 crore. The average assets per MLA for 27 MNF MLAs analysed stood at Rs 4.99 crores, six ZPM MLAs analysed is Rs 3.89 crores, 5 Congress MLAs is Rs 5.13 crores and one BJP MLA has assets worth Rs 3.31 crores.

The report further pointed out that 27 (69 per cent) MLAs have declared liabilities in their affidavits, adding that 3 (8 per cent) MLAs have declared their age to be between 30 and 40 years while 26 (66 per cent) MLAs have declared their age to be between 41 and 60 years.

“There are 10 (26 per cent) MLAs who have declared their age to be between 61 to 80 years,” it said.

Mizoram MLAs with criminal backgrounds:

Out of 39 sitting MLAs analysed, 2 (5%) MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves, while 1 (3%) MLA has declared serious criminal cases against himself. A total of 2 MLAs who have declared criminal cases are from MNF.

Mizoram MLAs’ educational backgrounds:

A total of 9 (23%) MLAs have declared their educational qualification to be between Class 5-12 pass-outs, while 29 (74%) MLAs
have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above. Only 1 MLA is a diploma holder.

Polling for the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly on November 7 and counting of votes will be on December 3.
