The Congress’ top leadership will deliberate on the Lok Sabha election results and chalk out its future strategy at a crucial meeting of the party’s working committee took place at Hotel Ashok in New Delhi.
In a post on X, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “The 2024 elections have been a MORAL defeat for Narendra Modi and the BJP while being a MORALE booster for the Indian National Congress and the INDIA Janbandhan. The extended Congress Working Committee is meeting at 11 AM today and the Congress Parliamentary Party will meet at 5:30 PM.”
The extended meeting of the party’s top decision-making body — the Congress Working Committee (CWC) — will see the presence of Congress Legislature Party leaders and Pradesh Congress Committee presidents from various states will analyse its performance and suggest measures to strengthen the organisation.
The party’s top brass, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, besides other leaders will participate in the deliberations.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, who has convened the gathering, will also host a dinner at Hotel Ashok for all extended CWC members and party MPs.
A Congress Parliamentary Party meeting, inclusive of all newly-elected Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, is scheduled for 5:30 pm in the Central Hall of Parliament.
With an increased tally of 99 seats in the Lok Sabha, the Congress has emerged as the second-largest party, up from 52 seats in the 2019 elections. This marks the first instance since 2014 that the Congress will secure the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, when Congress leader was asked whom he sees as Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, he said that it would be decided in the meeting.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said, “Our wish is the same as the demand of 140 crore people. (Congress MP) Rahul Gandhi has to take the position as Leader of Opposition (in the Lok Sabha).”
