As many as 15.9 crore voters cast their ballot in the Assembly elections held in the four states, the results for which will be declared on Sunday. The results tomorrow are being seen as the semi-finals as they come just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections due to be held in three months. The term of the Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana assemblies end in January next year.

The poll results have high stakes riding on them for the Bharatiya Janata Party as well as the Congress and the Opposition. For the BJP, which faced defeat at the hands of the Congress in the Hindi-heartland states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in 2018, the desperation for victory this time is amplified in view of the poll losses in Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka. Slip-ups here will deter the BJP’s plan of entering the Lok Sabha elections with a positive momentum.

The elections become even more crucial for the BJP since the party has virtually contested these polls without projecting any leader as a chief ministerial candidate and instead relied on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the face of its campaign. Victories in these elections, which the BJP has largely fought on the back of its welfare schemes and Modi’s “guarantee”, will do the party much good going into the general elections. However, the buck will stop at Modi in the event of a negative outcome.

For Congress, which is hoping to carry the momentum from its Karnataka election win to emerge victorious, will also have 2018 playing on its mind. The 2018 Assembly elections proved to be a debacle for the BJP but it still went on to improve its tally in the Lok Sabha elections held in 2019. A victory could boost its chances even further. The results also become crucial in view of the Opposition alliance Congress has stitched together for the general elections.

Positive outcomes in the states will boost Congress’ standing within this alliance and also come as a stamp of approval to the leadership position that the Congress wants for its leader Rahul Gandhi. Victories in these elections will also vindicate the Opposition’s agenda of a nationwide caste census and a potential revamp of the existing structure of reservations in India. More crucially, wins in key Hindi-heartland states, where Modi draws a majority of his support from, will deprive him of his aura of invincibility and possibly push the BJP on the backfoot.

Elections were held in Chhattisgarh on two phases on November 7 and 17, in Madhya Pradesh on November 17, in Rajasthan on November 25 and in Telangana on November 30. The results will be declared by the Election Commission of India on December 3 and the counting of votes will begin at 8 AM across the four states.
