A 29 year old man’s Reddit post about his B1/B2 visa interview at the Hyderabad US Consulate has resonated with many first timers and repeat applicants. The user who had 2 F-1 visa rejections in 2017 described the experience as high stakes, made more stressful by a few mistakes in the DS-160 and tension at the consulate.

He was accompanied by his 25 year old wife who had no prior visa refusals. They were applying for his brother’s graduation in June 2026. “This was a high stakes interview for me personally. I had 2 previous F-1 visa refusals (2017) when I was trying to pursue my masters in the US,” he wrote. Despite initial anxiety and confusion with paperwork the interview went well.

Interview Nerves, Past Refusals and a DS-160 Error

Adding to the anxiety, the applicant mentioned that while filling out the DS-160 he had listed his US citizen uncle as the point of contact instead of his brother — the actual host. “I later realized might raise a red flag — especially because my uncle is not hosting us and we’re not visiting him,” he noted.

During the interview the officer asked standard questions about travel history, employment, income and purpose of visit. Despite forgetting his IT return documents he handled the situation calmly by offering payslips instead. Meanwhile the officer was questioning his wife about her job, their marriage duration and his brother’s academic program.

Visa Approved After Careful Assessment by Consular Officer

“VO: Madam, place your right four fingers — followed by sir, place your left four fingers,” the applicant recalled. “VO: Your visas are approved. Thank you.” His wife replied with a thank you and the applicant just smiled and walked away.

The Reddit user appreciated the officer’s measured and respectful approach, “I really appreciate that the officer took his time with each applicant rather than rushing through or deciding based on mood or assumptions… Even if he had rejected us, I would still say he spent enough time on our application.”He also mentioned: “I saw a couple of LinkedIn profile printouts near his keyboard so I think they might even look up applicants online.”

He advises,“Every case is different, every VO is different and sometimes it just comes down to timing, clarity and a bit of luck. Trust your story and stay calm.”
