In the era of aggressive AI development, the United States continues to lead with tech giants all based in the country. However, now, Google has chosen India as the home for its largest artificial intelligence (AI) hub outside the United States. The tech giant is setting up a massive AI facility in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh, kick-starting a new chapter in India’s digital growth story.

10 things to know about Google’s second biggest AI hub

A $15 Billion investment for India’s AI Future

The AI hub will be built on Google’s full AI stack, which includes powerful data infrastructure, clean energy networks and high-speed connectivity. The company will invest $15 billion (USD) between 2026 and 2030. This is Google’s biggest-ever investment in India. The project will leverage expertise from Google’s R&D centers in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune, where teams are already developing advanced AI software and hardware.

Viksit Bharat 2047 vision

Google’s upcoming AI dream in Visakhapatnam is designed to speed up India’s AI transformation and support the Indian government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, which aims for a technology-driven economy.  The announcement was made at Bharat AI Shakti in New Delhi at a beginning of the India-AI Impact Summit 2026. The event was attended by top Indian ministers and Google leaders.

The event was attended by Ashwini Vaishnaw (IT Minister), Nirmala Sitharaman (Finance Minister), Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian.

Scale of investment

Earlier this year, Google announced its plan to invest $25 billion to boost its United States AI hub, which remains at the top, just months after Trump tightened the rules around H-1B visas, limiting immigration. With reports that big tech companies are planning to invest in India, Google will make $15 billion investment to spread over five years. The company will also construct a new international subsea gateway in Vizag, with multiple undersea cables.

What Sundar Pichai said

Google CEO Sundar Pichai called the new AI hub a “landmark development.” Pichai, under whose leadership Google has carried out multiple AI innovations, said the decisions would help India lead the next wave of global AI innovation. Taking to his X account, he wrote, “Great to speak with India PM @narendramodi @OfficialINDIAai to share our plans for the first-ever Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam, a landmark development.”

Data centre at Gigawatt scale

The Visakhapatnam AI hub will have a gigawatt-scale data center, capable of powering high-performance computing for AI research, innovation, and digital services. The facility will include “AI infrastructure, data capacity, renewable energy systems, and a fibre-optic network, all designed to make India’s AI ecosystem globally competitive,” according to Google.

Big Indian Partners

Google is working with AdaniConneX and Airtel to build the center. The facility will run on the same cutting-edge systems “that power Google products like Search, Workspace, and YouTube.”

Strengthening India’s AI capabilities across sectors

The new AI hub will support defence, agriculture, financial services, utilities, and disaster management. This will allow organisations to use real-time data for better decision-making.

Thomas Kurian’s Statement

The CEO of Google Cloud said,  “The Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam represents a landmark investment in India’s digital future. By delivering industry-leading AI infrastructure at scale, we are enabling businesses to innovate faster and creating meaningful opportunities for inclusive growth. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to the Indian and U.S. governments to harness AI responsibly and drive transformative impact for society.”

India meets Global AI network

Once operational, the facility will join Google’s global network of AI data centres, similar to the other 12 countries (United States, Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, India, Chile). This will add India to the elite list of nations with large-scale AI compute infrastructure.

Andhra Pradesh’s CM Chandrababu Naidu’s statement

CM Naidu, present at the event, said, “This significant investment in Andhra Pradesh marks a new chapter in India’s digital transformation journey. We are proud to host India’s first truly gigawatt-scale data centre and Google’s first AI hub in India, which is a testament to our shared commitment to innovation, AI adoption, and long-term support for businesses and startups in the state.”
