Revving Up Latin America: India’s Motorcycle Exports Surge to Over US$1 Billion in 2022

In 2022, India exported over 5 million motorcycles to Latin America, worth over US$1 billion.

The increasing demand for Made in India motorcycles in Latin America is evidence of the high calibre and affordability of Indian goods. In Latin America, India’s motorcycles are well-liked for several reasons.

In 2022, India exported over 5 million motorcycles to Latin America, worth over US$1 billion. The top four destinations for Indian motorcycle exports to Latin America are Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala, and Peru.

“First of all, their prices are usually economical compared to the prices of motorcycles made by other brands that are well-known. Second, India’s motorcycles are known for being dependable and long-lasting. Thirdly, a variety of models, such as cruisers, sports bikes, and commuting bikes, are offered by Indian motorcycles manufacturers,” explained Sandeep Wasnik, Advisor of ASIA – Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Motorcycles are usually categorized by their engine capacity, and it is recorded that motorcycles between 50CC – 250CC are the most exported motorcycles to Latin America. According to Ministry of commerce and Industries statistics available in the public domain, nearly US$2288.90 million in FY 2022-2023 (April-March) worth of motorcycles were exported to Latin America, followed by US$2519.91 million in FY 2021-2022 and US$1779.22 million in FY 2020-2021.

On the other hand, the exports of 250CC to 500CC India’s motorcycles are also demanded in Latin America, in FY 2022-2023 it recorded US$410.70 million followed by US$374.15 million in FY 2021-2022 and US$216.27 million in FY 2020-2021. Heavy engine motorcycles like 500CC to 800CC were also exported to Latin America, where in FY 2022-2023, India exported US$69.80 million followed by US$74.52 million in FY 2021-2022 and US$48.68 million in FY 2020-2021. More than 800CC motorcycle does not have many exports from India, in FY 2022-2023, exports of more than 800CC motorcycle recorded is US$0.24 million followed by US$0.06 million in FY 2021-2022, US$0.09 million in FY 2020-2021, US$1.13 million in FY 2019-2020 and US$0.06 million in FY 2018-2019.
