The ever-growing love of Indians for SUVs is well-known by carmakers across the globe and keeping that in mind, we now have most new vehicle launches taking place in the SUV segment. Launches in other segments too these days are dominated by vehicles that look like SUVs and as a result, one can today buy hatchbacks that look like an SUV, or at least are designed to look like one. One of the key reasons for the popularity of the SUVs beyond the feel-big factor is the higher ground clearance and the ability to tackle undulations/ obstacles with ease, which most Indian roads have. In order to encash on this demand, vehicle makers are going to launch more new SUVs in India in 2017. Considering this, we've compiled a list of SUVs coming to India in 2017 under Rs 20 lakh.

Ford EcoSport facelift

Ford introduced the EcoSport in 2013, in the country and since its launch, the compact SUV has garnered a lot of interest. With a minor facelift and a more powerful diesel engine, the EcoSport has avoided becoming an old choice in its segment and continues to post strong numbers. However, with the launch of some newer and feature-rich compact SUVs, the segment has evolved another step. Keeping this in mind, Ford is expected to launch a facelifted version of the EcoSport. Mechanically, the compact SUV will carry over the existing powertrain options and there will be two petrol and one diesel engine options, a 1.5 litre Ti-VCT unit, a 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine and a 1.5 litre TCDi diesel motor with a choice of 5-speed manual 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual transmissions. There will also be minor tweaks to the suspension setup for better ride and handling.

On the interior front, the EcoSport is expected to get a touchscreen infotainment system, which will be a huge change over the existing infotainment unit. The new touchscreen is speculated to support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with steering mounted audio and phone controls.

Expected Price: Rs 7.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, ex-showroom

Tata Hexa

The Tata Hexa will be one the most important launches for the Indian carmaker in 2017. It is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that we have witnessed doing duty in the current generation Safari Storme VARICOR400. This engine will be paired to a 6-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmission, wherein the autobox has been sourced from Punch Powerglide Strasbourg, while the shifter is sourced from ZF. The manual transmission has a torque-on-demand all-wheel-drive system, which has different drive modes for off-road ability. The automatic gearbox, although, would not have an all-wheel-drive system.

On the inside, the cabin gets an all-black theme on the top-end versions of both transmission options with the company's ConnectNext infotainment connected to a 10-speaker Harman audio system. It will come with six and seven-seat configurations and according to the company, the name of the vehicle has been derived from the word 'Hex' meaning six as it can fit a minimum of six passengers. The Tata Hexa is expected to target SUV/ MPV buyers and undercut the Mahindra XUV5OO and the Toyota Innova Crysta.

As claimed by the Japanese carmaker, Nissan Kicks is an 'all-new-global-crossover' that was introduced in August 2016, in Brazil, according to Nissan's global official website. The company announced in early 2016, that the Kicks will be launched in 80 countries and India is on that list. While the technical details of the new SUV are still under wraps for India, the Brazilian version gets a 1.6-litre FlexFuel engine that can work on more than one fuel options and is mated to an Xtronic CVT transmission. When launched in India, the Kicks is expected to share its engine and transmission options with the Terrano.

In terms of design, the Kicks SUV will mimic the company's signature four-sided front grille with chrome inserts and swept-back tail lamps along with blackened out A, B and C-pillar for a floating roof effect. Top-end variants are expected to have a contrasting colour of the roof from the rest of the car. Unlike the Terrano, the Kicks is expected to have a longer feature list with a touchscreen AVN or Audio, Video and Navigation system and steering mounted controls for audio and phone operation.

Expected Price: Rs 10 lakh to Rs 14 lakh, ex-showroom.

Renault Kaptur

Renault introduced the first generation facelifted Koleos in India in September 2011, but did not attract buyers primarily for the reason of its design not being butch enough and a hefty price tag (since it was an import) upward of Rs 25 lakh, ex-showroom. Later, the company tasted success with the launch of the Duster and now Renault will enter the premium SUV segment with the Renault Kaptur. The car is similar to in design to the Renault Captur sol in Europe, but will have a significant amount of changes.

The Kaptur is expected to be introduced with an all-wheel-drive version after its debut in the country and this is speculated to be powered by the existing 1.5-litre dCi diesel engine that would be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission similar to the setup seen on the Duster AWD.

Hyundai Elite i20 Based SUV

The Korean carmaker is developing a production version based on the Hyundai Intrado Concept, which is expected to be unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The debut is expected to happen in Australia, where it will be powered by a 1.0 litre and a 1.6 litre petrol engine. In India, this crossover/SUV is expected to share the same engine and transmission options seen in the Hyundai Elite i20 and i20 Active.

Expected Price: Rs 7.5 lakh to Rs 9.5 lakh, ex-showroom

Hyundai had unveiled the Creta facelift at the 2016 Sao Paulo Auto Show, with some design changes including a large hexagonal front grille, Daytime Running Lamps, LED head lamps and tail lamps. In addition, there would be changes to the interior equipment which would include a refreshed infotainment system.

Since this will be a facelift of the existing Creta, engine and transmission are expected to remain the same with two petrol engines and one diesel engine that will be paired to a choice of manual and automatic transmissions.

Honda WR-V

Honda has been working on a compact SUV based on the Jazz hatchback. This will be the Japanese carmaker's debut entry in the compact SUV segment and is expected to share its engine and transmission options with the Jazz. In the Jazz, the 1.2-litre petrol engine generates 88 hp of power and 110 Nm of torque with an option of a 5-speed manual and a CVT transmission. The i-DTEC diesel engine has an all-aluminium engine that generates 99 hp of power and 200 Nm of torque and comes only with a 6-speed manual transmission.l

Considering the evolution of the compact SUV segment, the Honda WR-V could be a good proposition in this segment and would offer customers in this space another option to choose from.

Jeep Renegade

Jeep entered the Indian automotive market with their flagship models, the Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee SRT and the Wrangler this year. The American carmaker announced at the official launch of these products that they will introduce a number of models in the more affordable segments and start local production in 2017. The company has already invested Rs 1,800 crore in India . One such awaited model is the Jeep Renegade, which would enter the compact SUV segment and is expected to be assembled locally. It will be powered by a choice of diesel engines and have automatic and manual transmissions, however, specifications of the vehicle can only be speculated at this time.

The Jeep Renegade will compete with the upcoming Ford EcoSport, the upcoming facelifted Hyundai Creta and the upcoming Renault Duster. To keep the price of the compact SUV aggressive, the American carmaker is expected to come with matching specifications, if not more.

The coming year is nothing short of exciting with a slew of SUVs that would be introduced in the country under the Rs 20 lakh price bracket. For newer brands, the key challenge would be to compete with established car makers and aware of this, such players will try and offer more features at the lowest possible price. This not only makes for a healthy competition, but creates more options for a potential buyer to choose from.
