As we had reported on January 13, Volkswagen will call its Indian compact sedan the ‘Ameo’. The sub-4 metre sedan will see its world premiere at the 13th edition of the Delhi Auto Expo and will be on display at the Volkswagen pavilion during the press and public days of the Expo. Alongside the Ameo, Volkswagen will also showcase the Tiguan premium SUV and new Passat GTE at the Expo.
“Derived from the Latin word ‘Amo’, meaning ‘I love’, Volkswagen Ameo is a special offering that combines the brand values of best-in-class safety features, build quality and a great driving experience. The design language is underlined by general bursts of emotion, conceptualised to move the body, mind and soul,” the company said in a statement.
The Ameo has been designed specifically for the Indian market, and will be manufactured at the company’s Chakan facility near Pune, Maharashtra. “By marking its entry into the dynamic compact sedan space, the Volkswagen Ameo is expected to be a game-changer for the brand in India,” the company added.
The Ameo will take on cars such as Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent. Since the Ameo is based on the Polo hatchback, we expect it to share its platform, various components, engines and a lot of features with the Polo.
