Congress leader Renuka Choudhury on Monday reacted to the news of Prime Minister Narendra Modi winning the TIME magazine’s Person of the Year via online readers’votes and said that it was obvious that he would win. Speaking to reporters outside the parliament she asked if there was anybody else who could ‘tear up citizen’s pocket and throat with one stroke.’ She further said that the Prime Minister could not attend the parliament but was busy deciding as to how much gold a married or unmarried woman was allowed to have.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the TIME magazine’s Person of the year via online reader’s polls. According to reports, Modi beat many other world leaders, politicians, and artists as the most ‘influential figure’ of 2016. Although TIME magazine’s editors choose the final Person of the Year, but these readers’ poll results provide a view of how the world looks at these figures.
Prime Minister Modi had won 18% of the votes when the poll had last closed on Sunday midnight. Narendra Modi was well ahead of his closest competitors which consisted of people such as the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, the President-elect Donald Trump, And Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, all of whom received 7% of the vote. The Indian Prime Minister also left behind other prominent personalities of the year like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and US Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. According to the September Pew Poll, Modi had seen high approval ratings from the countrymen and had ratified the Paris Climate Change Agreement. Although, Modi has come under severe criticism for his demonetisation move that had impacted the daily lives of the common people all across the country. Every year the TIME Magazine selects the most influential person of the year(for best or the worse), the p[erson who has had the biggest global impact in the past 12 months.
