Militants in the wee hours of Sunday stormed a battalion headquarters of the Army base at Uri, 102 kms from Srinagar. After a heavy gunfire and explosions, 17 army jawans were killed, while four terrorists were neutralised. Nineteen other personnel were also injured during the attack.

While Home Minister Rajnath Singh is currently chairing a high level security meet at his residence, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag are rushing to Kashmir.

SR Sinho, a Defence Expert while blaming Pakistan for the Uri attack said, “It seems like Pakistan has waged a proxy war against India because they’re getting agitated by Balochistan issue. It’s time for the government of India to take a practical approach, and react to this.”

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in a series of tweets said that Pakistan is a terrorist country and should be identified for it and isolated as such. Backing this view, former Home Secretary R K Singh said this attack was a joint effort of ISI and Pakistan army and it would be “misleading” to call this a terror attack.

“If you term it this terror attack, you are misleading yourself. The only way to handle these attacks is to hit back. Terrorist groups are just front;these attacks are planned by ISI and Pakistan army. It is a state-sponsored attack,” said Singh.

Talking about the attack, MoS Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said that the attack has been taken seriously by the Defence Ministry and such a situation won’t be tolerated. While, Nirmala Sitharaman said that the attack was an attempt to destabilize internal peace and harmony.

Ahir also asserted that Pakistan is irritated at the moment as it was unable to execute such an attack on Eid.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also tweeted about the attack saying, “Terrible news from Uri, 17 soldiers killed and many injured. May their souls rest in peace. Prayers for their families as also for the injured.”

Attacking Pakistan over the attack, Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Nirmal Singh in a conversation with ANI said, “Separatists, militants and Pakistan are a part of this controversy against India. They have hatched such a plan in order to create tension in our areas.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi who is on a 2500 km long ‘Kisan Yatra’ in Uttar Pradesh, observed a 30-second silence for those who lost their lives in the attack today.

Explosions and gunfire erupted as the militants attacked the camp, which is located barely few metres away from the Army’s Brigade Headquarters in Uri town, 102 kms from here, around 4 AM, official sources said. The jawans of the Dogra Regiment were sleeping in a tent which caught fire due the explosion. The fire also engulfed the nearby barracks, the sources said.

“A group of heavily armed terrorists targeted the rear administrative base of a unit at Uri, Kashmir. In the counter action, four terrorists have been eliminated and combing operations are in progress,” the Army said in a statement.
