‘Is it a military coup?’ asks Mamata Banerjee on army deployment in West Bengal

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had reportedly stayed at the state government secretariat "guarding our democracy" said that the army's deployment at toll plazas was the case of a millitary coup.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had reportedly stayed at the state government secretariat “guarding our democracy” said that the army’s deployment at toll plazas was the case of a military coup. Speaking to reporters Banerjee said that her officials checked in states like Odisha, Bihar, Kerala, Chattisgarh and no such thing was reported in these states. Banerjee said that the army deployment was just the case in West Bengal. Banerjee said that she would wait at the secretariat till the Army stationed at the Bengal state government secretariat in Nabanno was withdrawn. Banerjee said that the army was stationed despite the objection of the police. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar denied Mamata Banerjee’s allegations and said that the army had informed the West Bengal government and the drill had been on for a while.

TMC MP Derek O’Brien also went on social networking site Twitter to express is displeasure at the army Deployment in West Bengal and said that they had full respect for the army but the data they were looking for was already available. O’Brien then spoke to the army and said that they should not mislead people. He further informed that army deployments had also happened in other districts such as Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Darjeeling, Barrackpur, N24Pgs, Howarh among others. O’Brien posted a video of the army collecting toll taxes and asked if they were authorised to do so. Sudip Bandypadhyay of the TMC too spoke about the deployment of the army and said that they wanted a clarification by the Defence Minister and would rauise the issue in both the houses of the parliament. He further said that it was a grave situation when the Chief Minister was constantly ‘harassed’ and ‘her life was in danger’.

However, Union Minister of Urban Development said that the Trinamool Congress was simply making an issue out of everything and cited the example of her flight scare. He said that Mamata Abnerjee wasn’t the only person present in the pane. Speaking about the army deployment, he said that there was no meaning or reason to the deployment. He said that exercise would be carried on for the next 3 days. Naidu said that Eastern command had informed them that it was just a regular exercise for 3 days. He said that the it was fine if the TMC wants to divert away from the main issue at hand.
