The Editor in Chief of Times Now, Arnab Goswami has quit and he will definitely leave a huge vacuum in the 9 o’clock news slot that few if anyone can fill – in terms of volume, at least, even if nothing else. Arnab, as the anchor of the popular Newshour programme has always been acerbic and has taunted his panelists into embarrassing revelations and mouthing ill-tempered diatribes against him and others on the show. It is an art that Arnab excels in and he uses it at his incisive best and where this fails, he turns to outright accusations to make a point. That has been the man’s style since beginning and he has unashamedly stuck to it to ensure his show becomes the No. 1 in the TRP race. What cannot be denied is the fact that he is one of the most recognisable mediamen in the country. Needless to say, his taunts, even his ‘style’ of journalism, have not really gone down well with most people who have become targets of his on-screen aggression. They have shouted back at him, left his show in a huff or otherwise threw brickbats at him. Others, who are loathe to show too much emotion, have turned to mimicry to bring the high-flying anchor down to earth or just to grab some much-needed attention. Here we take a look at some of the people who have been moved by Arnab into relative indiscretions:
The first to kick off this listicle is Arun Shourie, veteran mediaman and former Union Minister who was virtually raging at Arnab Goswami for turning the world of journalism upside down. Watch video:
Next in line are Bollywood heartthrobs Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar, who made fun of Arnab during an IIFA awards function in a kind of hallucinatory manner about the use of ‘Never, ever, ever again’ and ‘how dare you say I take money’ conversation with BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi.
Comedian Cyrus Broacha also indulged in some Arnab baiting with his Newshour spoof on India-Pakistan relations, something on which the popular anchor has always been at his fulminating best.
Then there is none other than Arnab clone Biswapati Sarkar who has taken an altogether new look at how the anchor confronts his targets, this time the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its chief Arvind Kejriwal in a TV channel branded as Times WOW.
Be that as it may, stories about Arnab Goswami’s habit of getting the best, or worst, out of his panelists is legend, he also had a lot of fun at other’s expense. Here he egged on his panelists into ever extreme positions, till they actually went into actual mimicry. This time, BJP leader Sambit Patra got so worked up he started imitating Arvind Kejriwal.
It goes without saying that everyone will miss Arnab on the Newshour simply because there was no other show like his anywhere else – even though he has been accused of killing the essence of debates. However, the good news for all is that there are reports that he may start a venture of his own and we may yet see him again on his chair, staring unblinkingly at the screen and greeting the nation with his inimitable style.
