The FBI in Salt Lake City has released images of a “person of interest” linked to the assassination of Charlie Kirk on Wednesday at Utah Valley University. Authorities are now seeking the help from the public to identify the person. The probe agency has also announced a reward of up to $100,000 for information that could lead to identification or arrest.

FBI wrote in a statement, “We are asking for the public’s help [in] identifying this person of interest in connection with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.”

FBI about the suspect

FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls confirmed that investigators recovered what is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting, which is a high-powered bolt-action rifle, earlier this morning.

The firearm was found in a wooded area where the suspect is thought to have fled. In addition to the weapon, forensic teams are analysing several pieces of physical evidence at the scene, including a footwear impression, a paw print, and a forearm imprint.

Bohls also noted that the suspect appears to be of college age, and authorities have obtained images of the individual.

The FBI reported that the suspect was captured on surveillance footage arriving near the campus at approximately 11:52 a.m. local time.

Investigators have since traced the suspect’s movements as he entered the campus, navigated stairwells to reach the rooftop, and moved to the location where the fatal shots were fired.

Officials receive more than 130 leads

As reported by Sky News, officials have received over 130 tips related to the shooting. “I assure you that all leads and tips are being fully investigated,” said Robert Bohls, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Salt Lake City field office. Bohls also urged anyone with video footage or images from the incident to submit them to the FBI.

How did Charlie Kirk die?

The shooting took place around midday while Kirk was engaging with the audience at Utah Valley University.

According to video footage reviewed by authorities, Kirk was answering questions about gun violence when a single shot rang out, hitting him in the neck.

He collapsed on stage as students and attendees fled the auditorium in panic. Kirk was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead.
