Trump vs Musk: US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Elon Musk’s newly announced political outfit, the America Party, calling the idea “ridiculous” and warning that third-party politics would only bring “confusion and chaos.”

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said, “We’ve had tremendous success with the Republican Party. The Democrats may have lost their way, but the United States has always been a two-party system. Third parties have never worked, he can have fun with it.”

Trump calls Musk a “TRAIN WRECK”

Trump’s public remarks were quickly followed by a fiery post on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he accused Musk of going “off the rails.” The president wrote, “Elon Musk has become a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks. Starting a third political party is doomed to fail in the United States. All it will do is bring total DISRUPTION and CHAOS—something we already have plenty of from the Radical Left Democrats.”

He further asserted that the Republican Party remains “a smooth running machine” that had just passed the historic “One Big, Beautiful Bill.” A key feature of that legislation was the elimination of the federal Electric Vehicle (EV) mandate, which Trump said he had long opposed. “Now people are free to choose—gas, hybrids, or future technologies. No more EV mandate,” he wrote.

Allegations over NASA and EV policy

Trump also claimed Musk had previously endorsed him despite their clashing views on EV policy. “When Elon gave me his total and unquestioned endorsement, I asked if he knew I planned to end the EV mandate. He said he had no problem with that. I was surprised,” Trump noted.

He went on to reveal that Musk had lobbied for one of his friends to head NASA, a move Trump found questionable. “It’s inappropriate for someone so closely tied to the space business—and to Elon—to run NASA, given its deep involvement in Musk’s corporate ventures,” he said.

Musk’s new ‘America Party’

The America Party, formally launched by Musk on Saturday via his platform X, aims to challenge what he describes as a “uniparty” system. Citing a poll of 1.25 million users, in which 65% supported the formation of a new political party, Musk wrote, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it!”

Musk criticised both Republicans and Democrats for jointly driving up the national debt and proposed a laser-focused approach for the 2026 midterm elections—targeting just a few Senate and House seats to hold the balance of power.

Musk vs Trump

The announcement came just a day after Trump signed the EV mandate-eliminating bill, a piece of legislation Musk fiercely opposed. Musk claims the bill would add $2.5 trillion to the deficit and “bankrupt the country.”

What was once a strategic alliance between Trump and Musk has now devolved into a political feud as the Tesla CEO foreys into American politics eying the 2026 midterms.
