A former Indian Ambassador to China, Pakistan, and Bhutan, Gautam Bambawale has stated to ANI that there is a high chance of a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the forthcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. The expectation has been developed because of the recent deal between both countries on border patrolling across the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
As per Bambawale, the likelihood of such a meeting is ”very high” and also indicates a step forward toward minimizing tensions between the two nations. He pointed out that both nations were only able to reach an agreement because of bilateral negotiations between India and China and there was no involvement of Russia in the matter.
India-China Bilateral talks
In an interview with ANI, the former diplomat stated, ”I don’t think Russia has their involvement in it, especially in the case of eastern Ladakh, it is entirely the result of discussions between the two countries.” Bambawale explained that though this agreement holds major significance it will take time to recover from the tensions that started in 2020. He believes that a potential meeting between Modi and Xi can help in rebuilding the trust.
Restoration of the India-China relationship through trade and BRICS
Bambawale also stated that the agreement also indicates that China is willing to restore the ties to before 2020 status. If this happens then it can result in advancement in other areas like commerce, trade, and investment. ”It will take time to regain the trust but a start has to be made,” the former Indian ambassador added. The resolution of the border tension will make the BRICS grouping stronger, he pointed out. In conclusion, Bambawale asserted that if the status quo from before the 2020 military standoff is restored then it would be a very big diplomacy achievement for India.
