After the assassination of Palestinian resistance group Hamas’s chief Yahya Sinwar, the group is likely to choose its new leader from outside Gaza. Further, Mohammad Sinwar, Yahya’s brother and a key figure in the Qassam Brigades, is likely to play a more prominent role in directing the war in Gaza, according to Reuters’ report.
Hamas is currently facing leadership restructuring following the death of Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. With Sinwar killed in an Israeli raid, attention turns to the group’s internal deliberations about its future leadership.
Meanwhile, the political leadership may shift to figures based outside Gaza. Khalil Al-Hayya, Sinwar’s deputy, emerges as a central contender, positioned to navigate Hamas’ complex relations with Iran and Qatar, its key regional backers. Hamas will need to carefully balance these relationships, particularly as Qatar has played a significant role in ceasefire negotiations.
The Shura Council, responsible for electing a new political leader, will choose a successor, with Al-Hayya, Khaled Meshaal, and Mohammad Darwish as the main candidates. Analysts predict that Hamas may divide its leadership, separating military and political roles to adapt to the new realities of the war.
Despite heavy losses, including thousands of fighters and key figures, Hamas maintains its resilience. Israel’s military campaign continues, and the group’s leadership, both inside and outside Gaza, remains defiant, particularly on the issue of Israeli hostages. As the war rages on, the group’s next political leader will be tasked with negotiating Hamas’ future, shaping policies, and maintaining its military focus.
