US President Donald Trump on Monday hinted that DOGE, headed by his close ally and billionaire Elon Musk, might be shutting down, according to a report by the Politico.
Trump said that Musk has a big company to run and that at some point “he’s going to be going back”. Trump also said that he would want to keep Musk as long as he can, the report added.
It is worth noting here that Musk is actually a temporary government employee and that his tenure would be coming to an end in the month of May, the Politico said. However, a White House official had informed Politico in February that Musk is here to stay and that there is no end in sight as of now.
Trump’s comments regarding Musk’s tenure comes amid a lot of hate and criticism that is being directed at Tesla. Many Tesla cars and dealership have been burnt down as Musk’s right-wing views in Europe is not sitting well with a lot of people.
A Tesla dealership was partially burnt down on Monday where 17 cars got destroyed. Musk called this an act of “terrorism”.
Also, there has been a growing public concern for the cuts led by DOGE. Over half of the voters in the latest Quinnipiac poll were of the opinion that Musk an DOGE are hurting the country, the Politico reported.
Trump told reporters at the White House that DOGE’s impact would last because Cabinet members and agency leaders have learned a lot from the experience. He had also said that there will be a time when secretaries would be able to handle this work.
