World number one Serena Williams will have to wait another day to continue her quest for a calendar Grand Slam after the women’s semi-finals at the US Open were postponed due to heavy rain forecasts at Flushing Meadows.
According to the Guardian, Serena Williams’ semi-final clash against Roberta Vinci will now take place after the first last-four tie between Simona Halep and Flavia Pennetta at 11am ET on Friday.
Serena, the 21-time Grand Slam champion, stands only two wins away from securing the first calendar Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1988.
As a result of postponements, the men’s semi-finals will now commence at 5pm instead of 3pm on Friday. Top seed Novak Djokovic will take on reigning US Open champion Marin Cilic in the first semi-final before high-octane all Swiss contest between Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka.
