The Abhishek Sharma selection debate has intensified ahead of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final against England, with fans questioning whether India will tweak their XI for the knockout.
The young left-hander, who entered the 2026 T20 World Cup as India’s highest-rated T20I batter, has endured a nightmare run. After three consecutive ducks in the group stages and a scratchy 10 off 11 balls in the virtual quarter-final against the West Indies, calls for his exclusion have reached a fever pitch.
Overall, Abhishek has scored 80 runs in 6 matches, including a top score of 55. He has averaged just 13.33 in the tournament.
The case for sticking with Abhishek
Captain Suryakumar Yadav has been vocal about his ‘process-over-results’ philosophy. Despite the string of low scores, the team management views Abhishek as a non-negotiable asset for the Wankhede pitch.
Abhishek’s role is to ensure India doesn’t waste the Powerplay. His strike rate of 190.92 over the last year remains the benchmark for the New India brand of cricket. Having said that, he just hasn’t got going in this year’s marquee event.
