UPI down: Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services experienced a major disruption across India, marking the third major outage in a month. Users are facing widespread issues on digital payment platforms like Paytm, Google Pay and PhonePe. Tracking platform DownDetector reported more than 2,100 complaints till afternoon as around 80% of users have informed about failed transactions. Social media is flooded with screenshots of failed payment notification errors. People are especially facing problems while trying QR code-based transactions.

NPCI confirms the disruption

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages UPI services, confirmed the technical issue and has posted a statement on its official account on X. The post read, ”NPCI is currently facing internet technical issues, resulting in partial UPI transactions declines. We are working to resolve the issue and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused.”

Public frustrated with error notification

As the outage is currently trending on social media, many users vented their frustration and also shared memes about it under the hashtag #UPIDown. One user commented, ‘’#UPI Down again. So strange!! This is becoming too frequent nowadays. First #UPI goes down, then banks declare their own ‘downtime’.

Another one wrote, ‘’The shopkeeper is looking at me while I am crying to pay via UPI”

Yet another user shared his dilemma and wrote, ”What the hell is wrong with UPI? Ek ghante se dukan pe baitha hu payment karne ke liye.”

One user also gave a practical solution to the chaos. He stated, ”UPI is down again. Good that I always carry cash. Cash is the real King!!”

A similar outage was reported on March 26 and April 2 and once again affected individuals along with businesses. NPCI has not shared any details on how long it will take to restore the services, but the technical team is actively working to resolve the issue. As per reports, the outage may have originated from infrastructure overload because of an increase in the volume of transactions.
