The last date to file income tax return (ITR) has been extended to August 31? Responding to some misinformation being spread through social media, the Income Tax Department has issued a clarification in this regard sating that an advisory of Office of Press Registrar General of India shared on social media is being misconstrued as extension of due date for filing ITR.

The Income Tax Department has reiterated that the deadline to file ITR remains July 31, 2024.

“The advisory is NOT related to extension of date of filing ITR,” the tax department said in a post on social media platform ‘X’.

“The due date for filing ITR is 31 July 2024,” it said.

Meanwhile, taxpayers continued to complain on the social media regarding the technical issues on the e-filing portal even on the last day of ITR filing season. For the last one month, individual taxpayers and tax professionals have constantly faced issues in return filing on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal, prompting many to take to social media to raise the issue.

Meanwhile, over 6.58 crore taxpayers have filed their ITR so far on July 31, according to the data available on the Income Tax Department website. of this, 5.53 crore ITRs have been verified and 2.56 crore returns processed. Those who have filed their tax returns recently are now waiting for the Income Tax Department to process their ITRs and issue tax refunds, if any.

How to check tax refunds online using PAN?

To check your ITR refund status online using your PAN card, first you need to visit the official income tax e-filing portal at incometax.gov.in and log in with your PAN, password, and captcha code.

Taxpayers must ensure that they have the following essential details: a valid ID and password to log in to the income tax e-filing portal, PAN linked with Aadhaar, and the acknowledgment number of the ITR filed. These details are crucial for accessing and tracking refund status accurately.

Step 1: Visit the official e-Filing portal.

Step 2: Log in with your User ID/PAN/Aadhar

Step 3: Enter the ‘Captcha code’ displayed on the screen.

Step 4: Navigate to the ‘My Account’ section.

Step 5: Click on the ‘Refund/Demand Status’ option.

Step 6: The status of your income tax refund will be displayed with following Details: Assessment Year Status Reason on Refund Failure and Payment Mode.
