WhatsApp has introduced an AI-driven tool named “Writing Help”, which enables users to reframe, proofread, and modify the tone of their messages. The feature offers AI-generated alternatives, allowing texts to be rewritten in styles such as professional, lighthearted, or empathetic. To safeguard privacy, the tool leverages Meta’s Private Processing technology, ensuring that all conversations remain end-to-end encrypted and inaccessible to both Meta and WhatsApp.

Meta has collaborated extensively with the security community to examine and verify the technology.

“Independent researchers at NCC Group and Trail of Bits published their audit reports on the steps we’ve taken to evolve this privacy-preserving technology,” the company said.

WhatsApp notes that the Writing Help feature is entirely optional and disabled by default, ensuring users retain complete control over how they use it. The rollout has begun in English, initially covering the United States and select countries, with broader language and regional support expected later this year.

By adding this capability, WhatsApp positions itself as a direct alternative to external AI services such as ChatGPT, delivering a built-in tool for message drafting within the app.

How to access the new feature:

To access the Writing Help function, users simply need to tap the newly introduced pencil icon while composing a message. At present, the feature is available only in a limited number of regions and supports English exclusively.

WhatsApp is testing a voicemail-like feature:

WhatsApp is testing a voicemail-like feature that lets users leave brief audio messages if their calls are not answered. The option, now available in the Android beta version, resembles a traditional voicemail but prompts debate over its necessity since the app already offers voice notes in chats.

As reported by WABetaInfo through Tecnoblog, the feature adds a new “Record voice message” option that shows up when a call goes unanswered. Positioned next to the “Call again” and “Cancel” buttons, it allows users to drop a quick audio note directly, without navigating back to the chat screen to record.
