In a surprising turn of events, Google has announced its next “Made by Google” Pixel event will be held on August 13, a bit earlier than usual. The teasers shared alongside the announcement all but confirm the impending launch of the Pixel 9 line-up showing off a silhouette of a phone with a much rounded camera visor and matching rounded edges. It’s basically in line with what we already know basis of countless leaks and rumours.
Launching the Pixel 9 earlier than usual should help Google fend off any potentially big leaks that its Pixel phones have come to become notorious for. Google simply can’t keep the lid on these devices for long. Rumour has it that a bigger, more powerful Pixel 9 Pro XL may join the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro this year. This also means that Google may not make the Pixel 9a leaving the Pixel 8a as the last a-series Pixel phone. Google is known to maintain hardware uniformity across its phones so we can expect the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and the purported Pixel 9 Pro XL to come with the same Google Tensor G4 processor. Once again, it’s expected to be based on the Samsung Exynos architecture. Google is said to move to TSMC not before 2025.
Google really stepped up the AI game on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, though higher-end features were still reserved for the more expensive Pixel 8 Pro. The last Made by Google event was quite heavy on AI with Google announcing a bunch of features and enhancements for its personal voice assistant. Now the entire focus is on Gemini, its AI chatbot that rivals OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The August 13 event could see Google announce more deeper integration of Gemini into the Pixel 9 phones improving productivity and creativity on these devices.
The Google Pixel Watch 3 is also expected to be announced at the same event and we can expect Google to bring some AI chops to it as well. Since Google India is also sharing the teasers, it seems Google will launch the devices in India at the same time as global markets.
Google’s Made by Google event announcement is coming on the same day Samsung has announced its own Unpacked 2024 event for July 10. Samsung’s Unpacked, where it will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Ring and other devices, will also be heavily on AI. Watch this space for more details.
