After the tremendous success of the Nano Banana trends on Google Gemini, OpenAI has chalked out a new way to get people attracted to its AI video generator called Sora. The Walt Disney Company has signed a landmark three-year licensing agreement with OpenAI, integrating more than 200 of its iconic animated characters into the Sora AI video platform. The deal, which also includes Disney taking a major $1 billion equity stake in OpenAI, marks the media giant’s biggest strategic move into the rapidly evolving AI media landscape.
The partnership will allow Sora users to generate short video clips featuring popular cartoon figures, ranging from classic icons like Mickey Mouse and Cinderella to modern favorites such as Simba and Lilo and Stitch. Disney CEO Bob Iger hailed the agreement as a crucial step for the company, aimed at exploring “new types of storytelling powered by AI, but without sacrificing the protection of its intellectual property or the work of its creative teams.”
OpenAI-Disney deal: What’s what
Crucially, the agreement includes strict guardrails designed to protect Disney’s proprietary content and human talent, which has been a concern across Hollywood.
While characters are licensed, the likenesses and voices of associated actors are explicitly excluded. This means that while users can generate videos featuring characters like Woody from Toy Story, the AI will not be permitted to reproduce Tom Hanks’ distinctive voice or performance.
Furthermore, the license does not grant OpenAI the right to use Disney films or TV content for model training, mitigating a major concern for the studio that recently issued a cease-and-desist notice to Google over alleged unauthorised use of its content for AI training.
On the positive side, OpenAI users will be able utilise a wide range of Disney characters to play with. “Among the characters fans will be able to use in their creations are Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, Beast, Cinderella, Baymax, Simba, Mufasa, as well as characters from the worlds of Encanto, Frozen, Inside Out, Moana, Monsters Inc., Toy Story, Up, Zootopia, and many more; plus iconic animated or illustrated versions of Marvel and Lucasfilm characters like Black Panther, Captain America, Deadpool, Groot, Iron Man, Loki, Thor, Thanos, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, the Mandalorian, Stormtroopers, Yoda and more.”
How Disney benefits from the OpenAI deal
Godement described Sora as a “safe environment” where Disney characters can be used responsibly, aligning with the company’s objective to maintain control over its intellectual property.
The collaboration is also set to benefit Disney internally, with plans for curated Sora videos to appear on the company’s streaming platforms and the internal deployment of ChatGPT to assist employees. Both Sora and ChatGPT Images are expected to begin generating Disney-character content in early 2026.
