For American anime fans, the suspension of merchandise shipments from Japan has been a significant setback. This is due to the US government’s decision to end the “de minimis” exemption, which previously allowed imports valued under $800 to enter duty-free, a measure introduced to prevent tariff evasion under the Trump-era trade reforms.
Why are shipping partners halting parcels?
As of August 27, 2025, Japan Post, the primary shipping partner for many Japanese retailers, stopped accepting most commercial parcels to the United States, including regular parcels, registered airmail, and EMS. In addition to Bandai’s Tamashii Nations and Kotobukiya experiencing delays, major retailers such as Tokyo Otaku Mode, HobbyLink Japan, and Good Smile Company have temporarily suspended US shipments.
Collectors of well-known franchises such as Pokémon, Dragon Ball, and One Piece are particularly affected because they rely on imports for rare items, exclusive merchandise, and figures that are not available domestically. The suspension of traditional shipping options may result in higher costs for fans who are forced to use private couriers like FedEx, UPS, or DHL, which are still in business but charge premium fees and prepay customs duties.
‘Trump shouldn’t do this to us’
Netizens commented on their opinion regarding the recent development. A user wrote, “Wow I mean US must be a massive customer for them, so there’s no way it doesn’t hit them lightly. I don’t think Trump will care unfortunately.”
“I don’t understand why this Trump istrying to destroy suspended Japanese figure and Merch seller. It’s not right. Donald Trump should really have to work his attitude. He should be shame himself. How dare he how dare he?,” added another.
“Pls tell me pre-orders placed prior to this aren’t getting thrown into the void,” asked a user. “Japan Post suspending packages to the us is heart breaking (but understandable) cuz how am I going to get all my favorite characters’ merchandise,” noted another.
A netizen wrote, “Japan Post, Goodsmile, HobbyLink Japan and now, Tokyo Otaku Mode have all suspended U.S. shipments due to Trump’s tariffs. If you’re an anime fan and you voted for Trump, congratulations, you played yourself. You voted for this nonsense.”
